In response to a dramatically increased need, the video "Caring for Someone with Mid to Late Stage Alzheimer's Disease," addresses sensitive issues such as altered sexual behaviors, problematic toileting habits and aggressive behaviors.
The video/DVD answers difficult questions that thousands of people are reluctant to ask.
I was able to handle my own father's angry outbursts in a way that was non-threatening to him, largely because of what I learned through this training. This allowed me to enjoy his last few months instead of focusing on the ugliness of the disease. Now I pass along the wisdom of this video to other caregivers," said Laurel DuBeck, RN, Area Agency on Aging Community Education Coordinator in Byesville, Ohio.
"It's precisely because these issues are uncomfortable that we decided they would be an important component of our program. When caregivers understand that these behaviors are a result of the disease, and not intentionally harmful, it supports them in providing responsible care. The scenarios in this video offer guidance that help caregivers find solutions to each unique situation." said Marion Karpinski, RN, President of Healing Arts Communications.
Karpinski's narrative is paired with caregiver and expert interviews as well as vignettes filmed in Alzheimer's units and home environments. Among the list of sensitive topics are practical and creative ways to address:
- Repetitive, agitated and aggressive language
- Inappropriate sexual behavior
- Changed sexual desire, sexual dysfunction
- Intimacy needs
- Resistance to personal hygiene
- Inappropriate toileting habits
