More than 50 million people provide care for family members each year. Many family caregivers provide hospital level care but have never received any training in basic care skills. Essential Bedrest Skills, a new 34-minute video/DVD instructional program by Healing Arts Communications gives family and professional caregivers the skills and confidence they need to care for someone confined to bed.
"As a home care nurse, I saw how stressful it is for family caregivers to provide care without any training. That inspired me to start developing family caregiving programs. I wanted to do something to help family caregivers." said Marion Karpinski RN, who founded Healing Arts Communications in 1995.
Since then, Karpinski has produced 16 video/DVD programs on subjects such as fall prevention, Alzheimer's, infection control, safe medication use and other essential care skills. The company's latest program Essential Bedrest Skills focuses on the procedures and skills needed when caring for a person who is confined to bed. These include proper body mechanics and posture, bedrest positions, moving and positioning, recognition and prevention of pressure ulcers, use of a bedpan, and active range of motion exercises. The program includes interviews with professional experts and can be used by both family and professional caregivers.
"Sometimes caregivers think they do not need training. But activities like moving a person into various bedrest positions or making an occupied bed are difficult and potentially unsafe for both parties. When caregivers receive training, it reduces their stress level and allows them to provide care in a more confident way," Karpinski said.
Over the past decade, Healing Arts Communications has worked with thousands of organizations that use its videos/DVDs and other resources to help caregivers. The company has received a variety of awards for the excellence of its resources, including the 2006 Caregiver Friendly Award from Today's Caregiver magazine and the 2005 Small Business Award from the American Society on Aging.
