Course Description

Recent research has identified an urgent need to uncover and manage the “invisible” (also known as “psychosocial”) symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. We decided to explore and validate this theory through literature review, social media mining, advocacy outreach, and an interactive national webinar.

Course Objectives

This course incorporates multiple instructional modalities to ensure that learners understand the common barriers to assessing and managing invisible symptoms. Learners also benefit from direct access to actionable tools and resources that drive solutions and positive outcomes for all stakeholders.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • · List and describe five “visible” (physical) symptoms of MS
  • · List and describe five “invisible” (psychosocial) symptoms of MS
  • · Identify two barriers to recognizing and treating invisible symptoms of MS
  • · Explain why invisible symptoms need to be recognized and treated
  • · Describe the role of the healthcare extender in assessing and managing invisible symptoms
  • · List five healthcare extenders who support people with MS and their family caregivers
  • · Identify one validated assessment tool that healthcare providers and extenders can use to recognize and discuss invisible symptoms

    Instructor

    Christopher Kelly, M.ED, B.A.

    Your instructor for this course is Chris Kelly. Chris joined Griswold Home Care as the Director of Learning and Development in 2012. In this role, he works with a dynamic team to develop innovative learning and development programs for franchisees, healthcare providers, clients, and family caregivers. For the past 25 years, Chris has provided direct care, health education, support, and advocacy for children and adults who are facing challenging health conditions. Prior to joining Griswold Home Care, he served as Director of Education with the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter. In this role, he managed all education and support programs for persons with dementia and the family/professional caregivers who support them. He also managed a 25-bed Alzheimer’s Special Care center for a national assisted living chain. Chris dedicated the early part of his professional career to providing personal care and activities therapy in the LTC and CMHC settings. He has earned a Master’s degree in Adult/Distance Education from Pennsylvania State University and a BA in Psychology from LaSalle University. Chris has also presented for statewide, national and international conferences on the topics of Aging, family caregiving, Dementia, health literacy, and educational design. Chris has dedicated his professional career to his grandmother who lost a 13-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
